Kalamata is the transport hub for the southern Peloponnese. It has an international airport, a port, and good bus connections.
By Air
Kalamata International Airport (KLX) handles seasonal charter flights from northern Europe (mainly UK, Germany, and Scandinavia) during summer, and year-round domestic flights to Athens. The airport is 8 km west of the city centre; taxis are the main transfer option.
By Bus
KTEL buses connect Kalamata to Athens (around 3.5 hours), Tripoli, Sparta, and other Peloponnese destinations. The main bus station is in the city centre near Aristomenous Street. Athens buses run several times daily.
By Train
The railway line from Athens through Corinth, Argos, and Tripoli to Kalamata is scenic but service has been unreliable due to funding cuts. Check current TRAINOSE schedules before relying on rail.
By Ferry
In summer, there are ferry connections from Kalamata port to Crete (Heraklion), useful for anyone making a Peloponnese-Crete loop without backtracking to Athens.
