The easy day trips from Katerini are Mount Olympus (via Litochoro), Ancient Dion, and Thessaloniki, an hour north on the motorway and one of the most interesting cities in Greece. Further afield, Vergina — where the royal tombs of Philip II of Macedon were discovered in 1977 — is 80 km to the northwest, and the Byzantine rock monasteries of Meteora are 2.5 hours south by car.
