Sacred Macedonian sanctuary at the foot of Mount Olympus

The Macedonian kingdom's great sanctuary at the foot of Mount Olympus, dedicated primarily to Zeus (from whose name — Dios — the site takes its name). Alexander the Great sacrificed to the gods here before launching his conquest of Persia in 334 BC. The excavations include temples of Demeter, Isis and Zeus, a Hellenistic theatre, a Roman bath complex with superb mosaics, and several stretches of paved street. The adjacent Archaeological Museum of Dion holds the finds, including a famous 2nd-century bronze hydraulis water organ.
