The covered hall in the centre of town, designed in 1922 by the Jewish architect Eli Modiano, is what is left of the great Sephardic commercial city that Thessaloniki was before the deportations of 1943. After years of slow decline it has been restored, and is again a working market: fishmongers, cheese stalls, butchers, spice sellers, and a ring of small ouzeries and tsipouradika where you can sit down with a plate of grilled sardines and a carafe of something cold.
