Thessaloniki's sights cluster in three bands: the Roman monuments around the Arch of Galerius, the Byzantine churches scattered through the lower town, and the Ottoman lanes of Ano Poli on the hill above. Most are free or cheap, and almost everything in the centre is walkable. Aim to wander rather than tick off — the joy of the place is the way one era runs into the next on the same block.
