The so-called Thracian Meteora is a cluster of weathered sandstone formations in the hills outside Xanthi. The nickname is a little grand, but the comparison makes sense once you see the isolated towers and cliffs rising unexpectedly from the Thracian landscape.
Come for a short nature outing rather than a polished attraction. The formations are best appreciated in good light, and the trip works well if you already have a car for villages, monasteries, and mountain scenery around Xanthi.
