Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament sits on the eastern bank of the Danube and dominates the Pest skyline like no other building. Its 691 rooms, 29 staircases, and 10 courtyards are wrapped in an ornate stone facade bristling with spires. The building is best seen from the Buda side of the river, especially at dusk when floodlights pick out every carved detail.

Inside, guided tours visit the main staircase, the domed hall, and the chamber where the Holy Crown of St. Stephen is displayed under permanent guard. The crown, orb, and sceptre are genuine medieval royal regalia and feel surprisingly powerful in person. Book tours in advance, particularly in summer — queues at the door can stretch back along the embankment.

A story
When construction finished in 1902, the Hungarian Parliament was the largest parliament building in the world and remains one of the biggest to this day. The architects mixed neo-Gothic with neo-Renaissance styles and topped the result with a dome that was deliberately made the same height as St. Stephen's Basilica — a political statement about the equality of church and state.
