Europe Gate (Komárno)

Across the bridge in Komárno on the Slovak side: a curious early-2000s pedestrian square enclosed by an arched gateway and surrounded by buildings designed in the architectural styles of European countries. It is part theme park and part civic art project; the effect is striking even when you find it cheesy.

Worth a 30-minute detour if you are walking across to Komárno anyway. The square also hosts the town's tourist office and a small art gallery.

A story
The square is lined with 45 facades, each in the architectural style of a different European country. The project was conceived as a small piece of post-EU-accession symbolism for a town that had spent the previous century cut in half by a national border.
