Bars and Cafes

The student population keeps Szeged's bar scene reliably active. Most of the action is concentrated around Dugonics Square and Kárász Street in the Belváros, where bars and cafes run into each other along pedestrianised stretches. In summer the entire inner city seems to move outdoors, and terrace seating extends along most of the main streets.

The city has a strong coffee culture inherited from its Austro-Hungarian past, and there are several old-style kávéházak (coffeehouses) where you can sit for an hour over a single espresso without anyone minding. The Tisza riverbank comes alive in the evenings during summer, with boat-bar pontoons and outdoor venues adding to the more conventional options inland.
