Szeged is connected to Budapest by a direct InterCity train service that runs several times daily and takes around two hours. The station is a fifteen-minute walk from the city centre, or a short tram ride. Trains also run east to Békéscsaba and south toward the Serbian border, though the Serbian rail connection at Subotica is less reliable than the Budapest service.
By road, the M5 motorway runs directly from Budapest to Szeged, making the journey around 170 km — roughly two hours by car. Long-distance coaches from Budapest's Kelenföld and Népliget stations are cheaper than the train but slower. There is no commercial airport at Szeged; the nearest international airport is Budapest's Liszt Ferenc, about 170 km north.
