Ópusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park (30 km north) preserves the supposed site of the first Hungarian parliament, held in 895 AD. The memorial includes a large rotunda housing the Feszty Panorama, a monumental cyclorama painting from 1894 depicting the Magyar conquest, recently restored to its original scale.
Subotica (Serbia, 50 km south) is across the border and reachable by local train — a fascinating Art Nouveau town with a significant Hungarian-speaking population, a spectacular synagogue of its own, and notably cheaper food and drink than Hungary.
The Tisza River and surrounding floodplain offer excellent birdwatching, particularly during spring migration, when the wetlands fill with waders and wildfowl.
