Szeged Town Hall

Neo-Baroque civic landmark on Széchenyi Square, rebuilt after the great flood

Szeged's Town Hall gives Széchenyi Square its formal centre of gravity. The present Neo-Baroque building belongs to the city's great rebuilding after the catastrophic flood of 1879, when Szeged remade itself with broad boulevards and an unexpectedly grand civic face.

The exterior is the main reason to come: arcades, a central tower, and enough ornament to remind you that provincial Hungary could be very ambitious in the late 19th century. Walk around the square slowly, then continue toward the river or the Votive Church to see how planned and spacious central Szeged feels.
