Akureyri Art Museum

Listasafnið á Akureyri — the Akureyri Art Museum — occupies a building on Kaupvangsstræti in the centre of town and focuses on contemporary Icelandic art with an emphasis on artists from the north of the country. Founded in 1993, it runs a programme of temporary exhibitions rather than maintaining a permanent collection, so what you see depends entirely on when you visit.

The exhibitions are consistently well-curated and often include artists who are not widely known outside Iceland. The café is one of the better spots for coffee in the centre of town, and the building itself is worth a look — a striking converted warehouse.
