Nonni's House

Nonni's House is the childhood home of Jón Sveinsson, the Icelandic Jesuit priest who wrote the "Nonni" series of children's books in the early 20th century. The books, written in German, became enormously popular in Europe and Japan, and the house has been preserved and opened as a small museum dedicated to Sveinsson's life and work.

The house itself is a wooden structure typical of 19th-century Iceland, and the interior has been maintained with period furnishings. It is a short walk south of the town centre and is one of Akureyri's more genuinely touching small attractions.

A story
The "Nonni" books — about an Icelandic boy's adventures — were written by Jón Sveinsson and became beloved children's classics across Germany, Austria, and Japan in the early 20th century. They are largely forgotten in the English-speaking world, but in Iceland and among European readers of a certain age they remain a touchstone of childhood reading.
