Hlíðarfjall is the closest thing Iceland has to a proper alpine ski resort, located 6 km from Akureyri in the mountains above town. It has 23 slopes ranging from beginner to black, five lifts, and reliable snow cover from December through April. By any international standard it is modest in size, but for Iceland it is outstanding, and it is one of the main reasons Akureyri has a significant winter tourism season.
The views from the upper slopes over Eyjafjörður are spectacular on clear days. Ski and snowboard rentals are available at the base lodge; lessons are offered for all levels. It can be windy at altitude — check conditions before going up.
