Jólahúsið — the Christmas House — is a year-round Christmas shop in Akureyri that sells ornaments, decorations, and Scandinavian-style gifts from every season. It is one of those places that sounds gimmicky and turns out to be genuinely good: the selection is wide, the quality is high, and the atmosphere — warmly lit, wood-panelled, faintly smelling of cinnamon — is exactly right for a town that takes Christmas seriously.
Akureyri has long marketed itself as Iceland's "Christmas capital," and December in particular brings lights, markets, and decoration to the streets. The Christmas House captures some of that spirit year-round, and is worth a browse even in July.
