Clonakilty

West Cork market town tied to Michael Collins, black pudding, beaches, and music.

Clonakilty is a West Cork town with enough local pride to fill its colourful streets without becoming smug about it. It has a shallow harbour, a farming hinterland, beaches close by, and one famous son: Michael Collins, the revolutionary leader born just outside town.

The centre is compact and good for wandering, with pubs, food shops, and a market-town rhythm that survives the summer visitors. The serious sights sit around the edges: the Michael Collins House in town, the Model Railway Village by the road to Inchydoney, and the prehistoric stone circles and headlands west toward Rosscarbery and Glandore.

Clonakilty is a strong day from Cork, but it is better with a little time. Stay long enough to get out to Inchydoney, eat something local, and understand why West Cork treats this town as more than another stop on the N71.
