Elizabeth Fort

A small star-shaped seventeenth-century fort on the south bank above the city centre, with walls that can be walked for a free view across Cork. Built in 1601 to defend against rebellions during the Nine Years' War, the fort was used variously as a barracks, a women's prison, and a police station before being opened to the public in 2014. The interior is a quiet grassy enclosure with a few interpretation panels. Take fifteen minutes for the climb up the ramparts and the view down the Lee.
