St Patrick's Street

Cork's main shopping and ceremonial street, curving from St Patrick's Bridge to the Grand Parade. The 2004 redesign by Catalan architect Beth GalĂ turned it from a clogged traffic artery into a generous pedestrian-friendly boulevard with limestone paving, modern lighting masts, and contemporary sculpture. The street is lined with the standard British and Irish chain stores; the surrounding lanes (Princes Street, Oliver Plunkett Street) have the more interesting independent shops, bars, and restaurants.
