Bewley's Oriental Café on Grafton Street has been a Dublin institution since 1927, and its survival through several threatened closures has been a cause of considerable public sentiment. The building's great feature is its Harry Clarke stained glass windows — five panels in the ground-floor café that are among the finest examples of Clarke's luminous, jewel-coloured work.
The café still serves Bewley's coffee (roasted in Dublin since 1840) alongside its traditional sticky buns and hot cross buns. The first-floor James Joyce Room, with its theatrical balcony, is the most atmospheric place to sit. There is also a small Harry Clarke exhibition upstairs.
