Islandbridge

Quiet Liffey district where a Viking battle was fought in 919; riverside walks and weir

Address Islandbridge, Kilmainham

Islandbridge is a quiet Liffey-side district where a significant Viking battle was fought in 919 AD, and where large quantities of Viking weapons and jewellery were discovered during railway construction in the 19th century. The artefacts are now in the National Museum, but the area itself retains an atmospheric quality.

The weir at Islandbridge and the riverside walk along this stretch of the Liffey are a peaceful alternative to the busier quaysides of the city centre, and the War Memorial Gardens are nearby. It's an area that rewards a slow walk rather than a specific destination.
