At 62 metres, the Wellington Monument is the tallest obelisk in Ireland and the British Isles, and one of the tallest in the world. Completed in 1861 to honour Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, who was born in Dublin in 1769, it stands at the east end of Phoenix Park near the Kilmainham boundary.
The bronze bas-reliefs on the base depict Wellington's military victories and were cast from captured French and Irish rebel cannons. The monument is freely visible and makes a good orientation point when entering the park from the Kilmainham side.
