Roscommon

County town west of Lough Ree, with castle ruins, friary stones, and quiet midlands roads.

Roscommon is the county town of County Roscommon, a small place in Ireland's midlands west of Lough Ree. It is not a showy town, but it has the kind of layered history that rewards a slow walk: a ruined castle, a Dominican friary, an old gaol facade and a square that still feels like the centre of local life.

The town sits away from Ireland's main tourist routes, which is part of its appeal. You come here for a quieter inland Ireland of low fields, stone ruins, racing fixtures and roads that lead toward Athlone, Boyle and the archaeological sites of Rathcroghan.

Roscommon works well as a short stop by train or car. Give it time for the castle and friary, then use it as a base if you want to see Rathcroghan, Strokestown Park or the smaller places around Lough Ree.
