Chieti Cathedral

Cathedral of San Giustino on the central piazza, with a Gothic-Romanesque core and Baroque interior

The Cattedrale di San Giustino sits on the central Piazza dei Templi Romani and has been the seat of the archbishopric since the eleventh century. The structure you see today is mostly the result of a 1335 rebuild after an earthquake, with further changes through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries — Gothic windows, a Romanesque-bordered façade, and a campanile that rises almost fifty metres above the square.

The interior was given a heavy Baroque makeover in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with rich stucco and altar paintings. Down in the crypt, look for the silver statue of San Giustino, paraded through the city on his feast day in late May. The piazza outside is the social heart of Chieti, with cafés ringing the cathedral and a daily passeggiata that fills the corso each evening.
