Mule Path to Amalfi

The mule path descending from Ravello to Amalfi takes about 45 minutes going down, longer coming up. It follows the old route the town used before the road was built — stone steps, past terraced lemon groves and the occasional farmhouse, with views opening and closing as you descend through the valley. The path is well-maintained and easy to follow; wear shoes with some grip as the steps can be slippery after rain.

Going down is the obvious direction of travel (you can take the bus back up), but the ascent from Amalfi is a reasonable alternative for those who want to arrive in Ravello already having left the coastal crowds behind. Either way, the path is one of the best ways to understand the landscape — the vertical relationship between the clifftop villages and the sea below becomes physically real when you are walking between them.
