San Giovanni del Toro is the finest of Ravello's smaller churches, a 12th-century Romanesque building that retains much of its original fabric: a carved portal, an octagonal campanile, and an interior whose proportions feel genuinely medieval. The pulpit, supported on columns and decorated with mosaics, is comparable in quality to those in the cathedral. The crypt below contains a 14th-century fresco cycle of some merit.
The church is less visited than the cathedral and the villas, which means you can often have it almost to yourself. Opening hours are limited; the tourist office can advise on current times.
