The Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium is the most startling modern building in Ravello: a white concrete curve set into the slope on Via della Repubblica, a short walk from the old centre. It was designed by the Brazilian modernist in the 2000s and opened in 2010, giving Ravello a covered concert hall to complement the summer performances in Villa Rufolo's gardens.
The building divides opinion, which is part of the point. Ravello is otherwise a town of stone lanes, villas, gardens, and medieval churches, so Niemeyer's smooth shell looks almost alien against the Amalfi Coast cliffs. Even when there is no performance, architecture-minded travellers should walk out to see how the auditorium sits in the landscape, with the sea falling away below it.
