Salerno's medieval aqueduct cuts through the old town in a way that feels almost accidental, stone arches appearing between ordinary streets and buildings. The structure is usually dated to the ninth century and was built to bring water toward the area around the monastery of San Benedetto.
Local legend gives it the more dramatic nickname Ponte del Diavolo, the Devil's Bridge, supposedly raised in a single night by supernatural help. The story is more fun than the engineering is grand, but together they make the aqueduct an easy and worthwhile detour while walking central Salerno.
