The Mercato del Contadino — the farmers' market — takes place in the historic centre and is one of the best places in Reggio Emilia to find genuine local produce. Parmigiano-Reggiano at different stages of aging, culatello and other cured meats from the local tradition, honey, vegetables, and seasonal preserves fill the stalls. The market operates on a schedule worth checking in advance, as it is not a daily fixture.
This is also a good place to pick up smaller wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano directly from the producers at significantly lower prices than you would pay in a shop — particularly the younger wheels suitable for eating rather than grating. Vendors are generally willing to let you taste before buying.
