Reggio Emilia has a typical Po Valley climate: hot and humid in July and August, cold and foggy in December and January, with spring and autumn being the most pleasant visiting seasons. April, May, September, and October offer mild temperatures and the best light for walking around the historic centre.
Summer is manageable but humid — the kind of wet heat that makes stone buildings feel like ovens by afternoon. Many locals leave in August. Winter is grey and cold, with fog rolling in from the flat fields around the city. The theatre season runs from autumn through spring, making an evening at the Teatro Municipale Valli a particularly good reason to visit between October and April.
