Ex Sinagoga

The former synagogue of Reggio Emilia stands on Via dell'Aquila in the heart of what was the city's Jewish ghetto, established in 1671 and dissolved after emancipation in 1848. The building dates from the eighteenth century and was the spiritual centre of a Jewish community that had been in Reggio for several centuries before the ghetto was created.

The synagogue is no longer in active use but can be visited as part of the city's Jewish heritage itinerary. The interior retains its eighteenth-century character, with the traditional layout of women's gallery above and the main prayer hall below. Reggio Emilia's Jewish community produced several figures of significance to Italian intellectual and cultural life, and the building carries that history quietly.
