Fondazione Reggio Children Centro Loris Malaguzzi

The Centro Loris Malaguzzi is the cultural centre dedicated to the educational philosophy that made Reggio Emilia famous in schools around the world. Named after the educator who developed the approach over four decades of work in the city's municipal kindergartens, the centre hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events exploring the relationship between childhood, learning, and creativity. It is located in a renovated former industrial building east of the city centre.

The centre is primarily aimed at educators and researchers, but it welcomes general visitors too. The permanent exhibition explains the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach — the emphasis on the environment as a third teacher, the importance of documentation, the idea of the child as a capable and curious agent. Even if early childhood education is not your field, the centre makes you think differently about learning and space.

A story
Loris Malaguzzi was a local primary school teacher who began working with parents in bombed-out Reggio Emilia after the war to build new schools for their children. What emerged — through decades of practice and reflection — became the Reggio Emilia approach, now taught in early childhood programmes in over fifty countries. The city's municipal schools remain the laboratory where the approach continues to evolve.
