Monte di Portofino Trails

Headland trail network through Mediterranean scrub to San Fruttuoso and Portofino

The Monte di Portofino headland is protected as a regional natural park, and Camogli is its best starting point for hiking. The network of well-maintained paths traverses the headland through pine and olive groves, cistus, and rosemary, with frequent views down to the sea. The most popular route from Camogli is to San Fruttuoso — about 7 km one way, taking roughly two hours at a comfortable pace, with a descent to the abbey and beach at the end. From there, ferries run back to Camogli so you don't need to retrace your steps.

The longer traverse to Portofino town adds another 5 km and about an hour and a half. This is one of the best half-day walks in Liguria, combining coastal views, wild hillsides, and two of the Riviera's most photographed destinations. Sturdy footwear is advisable — the paths are rocky in places and can be slippery after rain. Take water; there are no reliable water sources on the headland outside of San Fruttuoso.
