Savona Cathedral

Savona Cathedral — the Cattedrale dell'Assunta — was built in the late sixteenth century on a new site after the Genoese demolished the original medieval cathedral on the Priamar headland in 1528. The current building has a Baroque interior of considerable richness, with a marble high altar and a series of paintings and frescoes accumulated over four centuries of embellishment.

The cathedral stands on Piazza del Duomo alongside the Cappella Sistina, creating a ceremonial religious precinct in the centre of the old city. The most notable artwork inside is a polyptych by Vincenzo Foppa from the late fifteenth century, predating the new building and presumably rescued from the demolished original cathedral. The cathedral treasury holds liturgical objects of quality.
