The Cappella Sistina of Savona is not a copy of the Vatican chapel, and it is better for not pretending to be. Built in the late fifteenth century beside the cathedral, it was created for Pope Sixtus IV as a memorial to his parents, members of the powerful Della Rovere family from the Savona area.
The interior was later reshaped in Rococo style, so the effect is pale, ornate, and intimate rather than severe Renaissance monument. It is one of those local Italian sights that would be famous anywhere else, but in Savona remains almost a secret.
