Savona is the workaday port city of western Liguria, easier to underestimate than to dislike. Cruise ships dock below the old harbour, ferries come and go, and the medieval core sits a few streets inland with arcades, towers, bakeries, and the kind of daily life that has not been polished smooth for visitors.
The city’s best sight is the Priamar Fortress, a massive Genoese citadel on the headland above the sea. It is a reminder that Savona was once a serious rival to Genoa, not just another Riviera town. The smaller surprises are closer to the old streets: the Savona Sistine Chapel, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the harbour-side Torre Leon Pancaldo.
Savona makes sense as a base if you want Liguria without Cinque Terre crowds. Albisola and Albissola are just west along the coast, the Riviera delle Palme starts nearby, and trains run easily to Genoa, Finale Ligure, and the French-border towns.
