The Castello della Pietra near Vobbia is one of the more dramatic sights in the Ligurian Apennines — a medieval fortress wedged between two rock spires high above the valley floor, accessible only by a steep footpath from the village below. It was built in the 13th century and served as a toll castle controlling the road between Genoa and the Po Plain.
The castle is partially restored and open to visitors at weekends. The walk up takes about 20 minutes and rewards with views back down the valley. Vobbia itself is a small, quiet village worth a look before or after the climb.
