Torriglia sits at around 800 metres in the hills above the Scrivia Valley and has long served as a summer resort for Genoese families escaping the heat of the coast. It's sometimes called the "Switzerland of Liguria" — a claim made by several mountain towns in the region, but in Torriglia's case the cool air and the green hills make it at least plausible.
The ruins of the Fieschi castle sit above the town. The surrounding hills have a decent network of hiking trails, and the chestnut forests are particularly fine in autumn.
