Swimming off the Rocks

Tellaro has no sand. Swimming happens off the flat rocks below the village, reached by short concrete stairs and iron handrails that drop straight into the Gulf of La Spezia. The water is deep, very clear, and on calm days a vivid blue-green over white pebbles a few metres down.

The best spots are the platforms south of the church, where there is room for a towel and a route back up that doesn't involve a scramble. Bring shoes you can swim in — the rocks are sharp where the sea has eaten into them — and go early or late if you want any space in July and August.
