Capitolium and Roman Forum

Best-preserved Roman temple complex in northern Italy

Address Via dei Musei 55

The best-preserved Roman public complex in northern Italy: a Capitoline temple rebuilt by the emperor Vespasian in AD 73, its Corinthian facade rising over the open space of the ancient forum. The cellae still hold the original Roman floors, and the six bronze statues — including the famous Winged Victory of Brescia — that were found buried here in 1826 are now the city's emblem.

The statues themselves are displayed in the Santa Giulia Museum next door, so pair a visit to both. The Capitolium is part of the UNESCO-listed Longobards in Italy World Heritage Site and one of the few Roman temples in the north where you can actually walk into the interior. Worth a stop even if Roman ruins aren't normally your thing.
