Faro Voltiano

Hilltop lighthouse above Brunate dedicated to Alessandro Volta, with wide views over Como

Faro Voltiano stands high above Como in San Maurizio, above the village of Brunate. The octagonal lighthouse was built in 1927 for the centenary of Alessandro Volta's death, which makes it both a monument to Como's most famous scientist and one of the lake's better viewpoints.

The usual approach is to take the funicular to Brunate and continue on foot up the steep lanes and paths. The reward is a broad look over Como, the southern arm of the lake, and the mountain rim beyond; at night the lighthouse still throws coloured beams over the valley below.
