Standing just outside the old city walls, Sant'Abbondio is one of the finest Romanesque churches in northern Italy. Built in the eleventh century by the Maestri Comacini — the master builders who spread their craft across medieval Europe — it has two slender bell towers flanking a deep apse covered in fourteenth-century frescoes depicting the life of Christ. The interior is austere and affecting.
