The Cathedral of Como is one of the last great Gothic churches built in Lombardy, begun in 1396 and finally completed — dome and all — in 1744. Its west facade is a richly decorated mix of Gothic tracery and Renaissance relief work. Inside, Flemish and Italian tapestries line the nave, and the side chapels hold paintings by Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

A story
Construction began in 1396 and dragged on for nearly 350 years — the Renaissance dome was not added until 1744, giving the cathedral the unusual distinction of having a Gothic body and a Baroque crown, all working together in surprising harmony.
