Lake Endine

Quiet Lombard lake for sailing, fishing, and escaping the crowds

Address Lago di Endine, Bergamo province

A small, quiet lake in the Val Cavallina, about 40 minutes by bus from Bergamo, Lake Endine gets a fraction of the visitors that Como or Garda pull in — which is exactly its appeal. The mountains reflect cleanly in the water, the shoreline stays green and undeveloped, and the surrounding villages feel genuinely unhurried.

In summer the lake is good for sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing, and a flat path circles much of the shore for walkers and cyclists. In winter it sometimes freezes over completely, drawing ice fishermen and a few brave skaters out onto the surface. The town of Monasterolo del Castello, on the eastern shore, makes the best base — it has a small castle and a handful of places to eat.

If you want a lake day without the crowds, the boat traffic, or the prices of Lombardy's famous waters, Endine is the one to choose.
