ENI Headquarters Campus

The ENI headquarters campus is the centrepiece of San Donato Milanese and one of the most ambitious examples of mid-century corporate architecture in Italy. Designed largely by the BBPR architectural studio — the same group responsible for the Torre Velasca in Milan — the campus was developed from the late 1950s through the 1960s as ENI's global nerve centre expanded under its visionary founder Enrico Mattei. The buildings combine functionalist rigour with a humanist attention to landscape: generous green spaces, covered walkways, and a coherent urban grammar that makes the whole campus feel like a small self-contained city. The main tower and the low-rise administration wings are particularly striking. Access to the campus proper is restricted, but the perimeter and public-facing buildings can be viewed freely, and the architectural quality is evident from the street.

story: > Enrico Mattei, who built ENI into a global energy power and commissioned much of the campus, died in a suspicious plane crash in October 1962. The aircraft exploded in mid-air near Bascapè, south of Milan. Decades of investigation pointed to sabotage, most likely by rivals who feared his independent energy policy, but no one was ever convicted. His ghost still seems to preside over this campus he created.
