Metanopoli

Metanopoli — literally "methane city" — is the model workers' town that ENI built from scratch in the early 1950s to house its growing workforce. The name says everything: this was a city created by and for a gas company, an Italian version of the company town taken to its logical modernist extreme. ENI commissioned leading architects of the era to design not just offices and factories but schools, a sports complex, a cinema, churches, and hundreds of residential apartment blocks, all laid out according to rationalist planning principles. Walking through it today is a quiet kind of time travel — the geometry is still sharp, the proportions still generous, and the social ambition still legible in the wide pedestrian streets and communal gardens. It is one of the most complete surviving examples of postwar corporate urbanism in Europe.
