The 15th-century Gothic merchant loggia on Piazza Kennedy is one of the finest pieces of civic architecture in the Marche. Designed by Giorgio da Sebenico (Juraj Dalmatinac), the Croatian-Dalmatian sculptor who worked extensively on the Adriatic coast, it is richly decorated with carved reliefs of merchants, saints, and heraldic motifs. The loggia once served as a covered trading exchange for Ancona's prosperous medieval port; today it is an atmospheric backdrop to the square.
