The Piazzuola del Sabato del Villaggio is the small square outside the Casa Leopardi, the courtyard the poet looked out onto from his bedroom window. It is the setting of Il Sabato del Villaggio, one of his most loved poems — a portrait of late-Saturday-afternoon village life with all its small expectancy and quiet sadness.
The square is paved in dark stone, ringed by a few low houses and the wall of the Leopardi palazzo, and is normally empty of more than a handful of visitors. The well at the centre and the simple facades along the south side are exactly as they appear in the poem. A small plaque carries the relevant lines. Come at dusk, when the long lines of Il Sabato del Villaggio fit the light best.
