Chiesa di Sant'Agostino

Gothic church with the Torre del Passero Solitario as its bell tower

The church of Sant'Agostino was built in the fourteenth century by the Augustinian order and rebuilt several times after earthquakes; the result is a church whose simple Gothic shell is filled with a mostly seventeenth-century baroque interior, hung with paintings by local Marche masters. The main door, with its pointed arch and finely carved capitals, is the best surviving piece of medieval stonework.

Most visitors come for the connection with Leopardi: the bell tower next to the church is the Torre del Passero Solitario of his poem. The small piazza outside is a good place to pause on a walk through the eastern part of the old town.
