San Vito is the oldest church in Recanati, founded in the eleventh or twelfth century and preserving substantial parts of its original Romanesque-Byzantine fabric: the apse, the crypt, and stretches of the lower walls. Most of what is visible from the outside, however, is sixteenth- and seventeenth-century rebuilding in pink brick and grey stone.
The interior is plain and atmospheric — a single nave with a wooden roof, a few side altars, and a Renaissance-period crucifix above the high altar. The church is at the eastern edge of the centro storico, and a short walk further out brings you to the Sant'Agostino quarter and the Torre del Passero Solitario.
